Aluminum Windows - Lewisville Tx.

Window on a hillAluminum Windows
Although windows with aluminum frames can not be as energy efficient as Vinyl or Wood framed windows, that doesn't mean that they must be entirely energy inefficient.

Some Aluminum framed windows come very close to being Energy Star Rated by manufacturing their aluminum frames with a "thermal break" that prevents the outside aluminum from conducting all the way through the frame.

Advantage of Aluminum Framed Windows
Because Aluminum is a rigid building material, it is possible to build extremely strong frames with a reletively small amount of material. Meaning, Aluminum Window Frames are usually more narrow than that of Vinyl or Wood Frames. This allows for a larger viewing area (more glass and less frame).

Disadvantages of Aluminum Framed Windows
  • Rigid Frames:  Homes in the Dallas / Ft Worth area and throughout North Texas are often built on clay. Movement is almost inevitable. Aluminum window frames do not flex or adapt to the movement of a North Texas home without affecting the way the window operates.  The movement of a home (because of drought, heavy rains or foundation issues) can pull Aluminum window frames out of square and cause the movable window sash to stick or to not open at all.
  • Condensation:  Metal framed windows sweat in the winter because when warm (moist) interior air cools rapidly against cold window frames it contracts and releases moisture.  This problem can be solved by manufacturing the window with a polyurethane barrier that separates the exterior (cold) aluminum frame from the interior (warm) aluminum frame.  Unfortunately, this process adds considerable cost to the window but those costs are reimbursed over time through lowered utility bills.
  • Life span:  More than windows with Vinyl frames, those with Aluminum frames have an expiration date.  Once an aluminum window frame moves too much, repair is almost impossible.
  • Maintenance:  Aluminum windows fade over time.
  • Necessary Glass Replacement:  It is common for exterior Aluminum frames to heat to temperatures that break down the silicone that binds the glass to the frame.  Each day, the silicone heats up and each evening when the temperatures fall, the silicone re-congeals.  This process repeats day after day, until the silicone seal fails.  When this happens, the glass becomes cloudy with moisture and needs to be replaced.

Old Aluminum Windows are not designed to last. Obviously, home builders are trying to build a good home at low costs. Cheap Aluminum windows are fine when they're first installed but quickly break down. Single pane windows begin to show condensation on the inside of the glass and double pane windows will show condensation between the panes.

Aluminum is an extremely good conductor of heat and cold. In hot climates, the temperature of the exterior aluminum can melt the seal that joins the glass to the frame. That evening the seal re-congeals and this happens day after day until the window fails.

If the outside frame becomes hot or cold, the temperature quickly transfers to the inside of the aluminum.

New Aluminum Replacement Windows were designed with Energy Efficiency in mind.

Energy Efficient Aluminum windows are built with a Polyurethane Thermal Break that separates the outside aluminum from the inside Aluminum. This prevents heat or cold from transfering through the frame and effecting the inside temperature of your home.

Aluminum windows will never be as Energy Efficient as Vinyl or Wood Windows and they are not Energy Star rated but these new Aluminum Windows are much more efficient than New Construction Windows.

Seal failure is still a concern even with the Efficient Aluminum Replacement Windows.

Keys to Finding a Great Deal on replacement windows:

step one in finding a great deal on windows pic
The first key to getting a great deal on windows, is to not buy replacement windows if it doesn't make sense to. The average legth of time that people are staying in their home is now 4 years. Of course, we are including 'first time buyers' and home flippers into that average but nevertheless, 4 years isn't that long. Replacement Windows are an investment and all investments take time to pay for themselves.

Our general rule of thumb is this: If you don't know for a fact that you're going to stay in your home for another 4 years, you shouldn't update with replacement windows. Unless your windows are dangerous or extremely unsightly, there is no way to justify the cost. The purchase that you make will finally have paid for themselves years into the new owners stay. However, if you are sure that you'll still be living in your home in the next 8 years, you should replace your windows at the first opportunity. Replacement Windows don't start paying for themselves until they are installed and the work is done.
step two in finding a great deal on windows pic
The second key to getting a great deal on replacement windows is to avoid salespeople. Look, all construction related industries get a bad rap based upon the shady salesmanship of a few. The good news is, if you already know that you need to update with energy efficient replacement windows, why do we need salespeople at all?

At Adams Exteriors we employ Projet Managers who are responsible for the details of your project. They, however, do not get paid a percentage of the profit the way that the typical salesperson does. So, there are no "high pressure" sales tactics... there is no phone call every night to badger the customer about their windows. More than that, when we subtract the salesperson we can standardize our prices.. meaning, each customer pays the same amount for a given window regardless of their income. Nobody is trying to get rich off of you.
step three in finding a great deal on windows pic
The third key to finding a great deal on energy efficient replacement windows is to avoid the "bottom of the barrel". Window prices can fluctuate. One manufacturer could offer great deals on slider windows while another offers deals on bay windows. However, when you find the cheapest installed window on the market, you've found the bottom of the barrel. Avoid it.

Bottom of the Barrel windows have a way of becoming extremely costly in the long run. Either they come with surprise expenses of so many headaches that you're disgusted by your poor choice every time you look at your home. It's not worth it. There is absolutely no reason why, with a little homework, we can't find a high quality "mid-grade" window for an affordable price. Obviously, "a great deal" doesn't always mean the "cheapest".

Heating Season Savings

In climates with a significant heating season, non-energy efficient windows can represent a major source of unwanted heat loss, discomfort, and condensation problems. In recent decades, windows have undergone a technological revolution. It is now possible to have lower heat loss, less air leakage, and warmer window surfaces that improve comfort and minimize condensation. The graphs below illustrate the simulated savings in heating season costs associated with energy efficient windows for a typical house in a heating-dominated climate. The savings shown do not include possible savings from reduced air leakage. Depending on the condition of the old windows in an existing home, the savings can be higher if window replacement leads to long-term air leakage reduction.
